Freeze-Proof your Tank
The water temperature in a giant rubber water tank will fluctuate less than other tanks because the thick rubber insulates the water. The water will naturally be cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. With some minor adjustments and a little foresight you can make it a low energy or freeze-proof tank. Following are some ideas that have demonstrated success:
This tank is in northern Wyoming where the temps regularly hit -20°F. The tank was covered with 3x12's to minimize exposure to the frigid air. One side of the tank is bermed. Two aquarium bubblers are placed in the water and run off of a car battery. This tank remains ice free at -20°F with no heat!
Other customers have used "earth tubes" to transfer geothermal heat from the ground to the water. Below is an illustration of this:
